13 lakh 20 thousand seats in higher education

The Bangladesh University Grants Commission (UGC) has said that there are about 13 lakh 20 thousand seats in various higher education institutions for undergraduate honors, graduate passes and equivalent courses. The company has claimed that there will be no crisis in the country’s higher education seats. The UGC said this in a press release sent to Daily Shiksha.com on Sunday (January 31).

HSC and equivalent results were released on January 30 without examination. The assessment showed that 13 lakh 8 thousand students have passed HSC and equivalent level.
According to the UGC, there are about 1.32 million seats in various higher education institutions for undergraduate honors, graduate passes and equivalent courses. Of these, 60,000 are in 39 public universities, 2,03,065 in 95 private universities, 7,72,815 in national universities, 60,000 in Islamic Arabic universities, 7,758 in open universities, 440 in two international universities and 10,500 in medical and dental colleges. 23,330 in seven colleges affiliated to the university, 80 in 4 engineering colleges, 620 in 6 textile colleges, 5,600 in government and private nursing and midwifery, 854 in 14 marine and aeronautical colleges, 500 in Dhaka and Rajshahi universities and 500 in 3 different institutions of Chittagong University. There are 290 seats in the affiliated institutions of the university.

UGC member Professor. Muhammad Alamgir told DailySiksha.com that there would be no crisis this year in terms of seats in higher education. Almost all students will have access to higher education. However, there will be fierce competition for admission in the preferred educational institution and subject, he said.
He also said that in the 2020-2021 academic year, 20 general and science and technology universities and 6 agricultural major universities of the country will hold admission test in cluster system. The final decision on the admission test will be announced this week at the University of Engineering and Technology.
